Badrutt’s Palace Hotel – Serlas Wing

Rooted in the landscape of the Engadin valley and the historic village fabric of St. Moritz, the Serlas Wing extends the iconic Badrutt’s Palace Hotel with an architecture that interprets Alpine tradition through a contemporary architectural presence. The project responds to its context with a design language that is solid, tactile and enduring, offering a vision of hospitality that resonates with the spirit of place and the evolving expectations of a multigenerational clientele. Located along Via Serlas, the new wing reconnects with the surrounding village through a sequence of stairways and pedestrian links that improve accessibility to the historic pedestrian core of St. Moritz. At street level, a colonnade continues the rhythm of adjacent porticoes and hosts a sophisticated shopping gallery, activating the urban frontage and integrating the building into the public life of the town. The six-storey volume, inspired by the proportions and spatial logic of traditional Engadine houses such as the Chesa Planta, is clad in locally sourced Dorato Valmalenco stone with deep bronze-framed openings. A cantilevered wooden roof, crafted using regional techniques, establishes a contemporary language for the volume while expressing continuity with the local building culture. Guests enter the new wing through a triple-height lobby crossed by a sculptural bridge and lit by a large arched window, framing views of the surrounding mountainscape. The project includes 25 guestrooms and suites, designed to provide a refined and generous experience of contemporary living. The interiors are characterized by natural oak wood, rough-cut stone flooring and wool-clad walls, drawing inspiration from local materials and traditions. The interior palette enhances the connection between guests and the Alpine landscape, with carefully positioned windows inviting light and views into every space. A private underground tunnel links the Serlas Wing to the main Palace building, creating a seamless mobility system for hotel guests. From the new suites, guests can reach the historic lobby and wellness centre or ascend in covered comfort to the renowned Chesa Veglia restaurants and the boutiques along Via Serlas. Designed with a profound respect for place, the project balances tradition and innovation, emphasizing durability and sustainability. The materials were selected for their regional provenance and long-lasting quality, while the details were conceived through a contemporary interpretation of vernacular craftsmanship. The building’s facade and lighting design accentuate its sculptural presence within the village. The project invests in improving everyday experiences: the pedestrian connections towards the village centre reweave the urban fabric of St. Moritz, enhancing walkability and reinforcing the sense of rootedness of this new chapter in the hotel’s history.
